This was intriguing because I knew this prominent figure had significantly contributed to $DEGEN's growth in a short timeframe. They were not working for a salary but were instead driven by interest in the airdrop and coins they purchased on the market. Astonishing! Do you know of another industry like it?
Furthermore, as one of the top holders when $DEGEN was first airdropped, I can tell you about a group of large holders who made a pact to not sell early and help the product/community grow. We knew that for $DEGEN to be successful, it required a group effort and proper distribution.

The Perfect Storm
As an early advocate, I recognized something special in $DEGEN. It is rare to see an opportunity with such reach. This intuition is gathered from multiple threads over many years. It's not easy to see for the regular observer, so I want to break down the opportunity that led to a 1600X gain at all-time highs.
Before diving into the story, let's first explore the word "Degen," which is the "Ape" of this crypto cycle. The word and its identity provoke a visceral reaction. Over the past few years, I've met people ranging from basement dwellers living with their parents to COOs of large blockchain projects. When asked about their entry into the crypto space, many proudly mentioned they were doing "Degen Shit." Conversely, some of the smartest people I know uttered the word with disgust, calling them single-celled organisms. When I see such extreme and polar opinions, I run toward it with force. Almost always, there is something there.
Back in early 2024, Farcaster was in its infancy. Coins were starting to pop up off the back of early meme coin hype from the Solana blockchain, like $BONK and $WIF. The first one I remember was $POINTS, but it was short-lived due to the poor distribution of the airdrop. Some early members even used it to line their pockets by selling tokens like $SPAM.
Channels had just been launched, and people were directed to cast in channels by default instead of the vanilla home feed. The /degen channel rose to be the most active channel and remains one of the top channels alongside /base. Word started to spread about an airdrop to Farcaster users based on their casting history, slightly weighted toward activity within the /degen channel. Unlike previous attempts to gain casters' attention, this was somewhat of a fair launch. $DEGEN was airdropped to users, and it had a slow start. You could buy as much as you wanted for pennies as most were selling the small amount they received.
$DEGEN Takes The Stage
Shortly after the first airdrop, the founder Jacek announced that $DEGEN would be predominantly a tipping coin, with users given an allowance based on their activity. This allowance was dynamic, with boosts for certain channels like /degen and /founders. The idea was to reward valuable casts with a coin. This took off, attracting mixed reactions. Some dove straight in and went tip ballistic, dropping $DEGEN like rain in Malaysia during the wet season. The Warpcast team leaned into it, adding the $DEGEN logo instead of the like button when $DEGEN was mentioned in a cast. This made some people angry as it was flooding their meticulously curated home feed (later, the same person would invest in the investors round, helping fund development). $DEGEN's price shot up! Many called it a bubble, which eventually deflated when the airdropped tips were distributed.
VC's Buy After Us Plebs
After the initial rise, $DEGEN started to get attention from sophisticated investors within the Farcaster ecosystem. 1conf approached the founder and acquired a share of the dev-allocated tokens in an OTC deal at a discount to the market price. This was another controversial moment for $DEGEN, as retail was starting to see VCs as arch-nemeses after the damage they had done over the years. Ultimately, 1conf is a different type of VC, providing value to the space and $DEGEN. This was a pivotal moment, boosting $DEGEN and increasing its "legitimacy."
BOOM!
One unique feature of $DEGEN's tipping mechanism was the distribution of token holders. The number of holders increased significantly in a short time. This was a huge plus for $DEGEN and an innovative way to tackle the problem of widespread distribution. As of this writing, it has the third-largest holder base of all tokens on Coinbase's Base chain at 620,080. During the Easter break in April 2024, as $DEGEN tips were distributed for Airdrop 2 Season 3, $DEGEN also launched as an L3, labeled as the casino for Web3. Interest swept through to X, bringing $DEGEN to a high of $0.064. Unfortunately, the hype died down, distribution increased, and the price slowly collapsed.
The Opportunity
After distribution, a few other attributes are essential for a token: attention and buy-in. Cobie famously blogged about how crypto is a game of attention.
Firstly, Farcaster as a content platform and an army of contributors like you provide a gateway for new participants to get acquainted with $DEGEN quickly. Never before has there been such reach.
Secondly, Coinbase's Base chain will bring a massive influx of new users. $DEGEN, being one of the most well-known tokens, and the ability to use it in fun ways will entice many as they flow through that funnel.
Farcaster is known for its dev community, which has helped $DEGEN integrate into various applications and attract builders through grant rounds. The buy-in has been astounding for a token less than six months old.

It's so true, even if we wish it wasn't. I was born near the end of communism in Albania, so I grew up during the transition from a totalitarian state to a democracy. I got to see firsthand what severe economic hardship looks like, and it gave me a unique perspective on freedom. It probably explains why I have such a deep appreciation for democratic values and why I see the world the way I do (more globally vs nationally)

This is super interesting. There aren't precedents that I know of. But yes, water vapor is actually responsible for about half of all radiative forcing, ahead of CO2. We don't talk about it much because humans generally don't introduce water vapor into the stratosphere (that may change if hydrogen-powered aircraft take over). Also, atmospheric water vapor has a really short life span (couple of weeks) compared to centuries or more for CO2, so it's usually not a concern. But in this instance it was a large amount of H2O at once so the effect is noticeable, mostly on the ozone layer but also (very slightly) on positive forcing. I don't have the data to say whether a regular volcanic eruption of the same magnitude, but spewing particulates instead of H2O in the stratosphere, would have had a greater (negative) forcing effect than the H2O had (in the positive direction).
All I know is that atmospheric seeding is one of the geoengineering ideas pushed forth to try and reduce the amount of solar radiation that reaches the surface of the earth, precisely because particulates (whether from ships, volcanoes, or seeding) are very effective at that

best way to approach moxie: assume moxie is locked and doesn’t trade yet — it's just points you will find out if they are worth anything 6 months from now so either keep yours or try to build a position if you believe the price is low now selling now feels like giving yourself a chance to miss out on a big thing
don't think so, it'll only go up if the market goes up or if more VC money flows in unless something big happens, it can become worthless within a month already selling a piece every day remains the best way to go about it I think
fan tokens are overbought also, to get back the moxie you put in it'd take months, and then you must be lucky enough to sell on top of the bounding curve to keep the profits
in one way, I see what you're getting at, and I'm inclined to wait to see if it succeeds. otoh, it is a bit disproportionate if everyone agrees w/ the impression that moxie burned into bonds is somehow "locking" those bonds in aggregate. we have more of a "won't defect" situation than a "can't defect", assuming access from block explorer is uninterrupted.

i would add on top of this, the sentiment around it from a personal level, from people that were (are) inexperienced on crypto this was my first /big/ airdrop, and the first 3 months i was riding a volatility that made me feel adrenaline, but always within the +/- 99% range. it didn’t happen often that it hit a 100+% price change i held through that because i saw something that made me feel that it was a good idea, but i can definitely see why some people sold at the beginning, when free money was free money without ever knowing that it could be much more free money, if you had the gut to sit on the rollercoaster for long enough

I fully agree. Given that we acquired this token without spending anything, let's focus on evolving our FT and continue to cast as we have been doing. After that, we can support the creators we admire by buying their FT. That's the approach I'm taking, at least. 💜

Fan tokens have crazy hot potential because there's multiple mechanisms for making the value go up. If I cast well, my fan token value goes up. But also, if the Moxie value goes up, the fan token value goes up. If people buy my tokens, the fan token value goes up. Buy the fan tokens of a few prolific casters, let them sit for six months, then sell some for profits while investing in some new creators, cuz if this experiment goes well, more will definitely be showing up!

Don’t mind this idea at all. I do mind the issues with engagement that make it kind of miserable to try and respond to people with higher followers. I understand it’s the same general Idea with respect current social Media standards. but this was supposed to be built on the idea that things are different, you own your data, and you can interact with anyone. I don’t really care about the tokens as much because they’re pennies right now. But for something to be worth pennies es to make interaction so toxic is not cool at All.

A thread 1) Hello Degen community! cc @jacek @cadillion @wake I believe you all have noticed the recent developments and discussions to the tipping system. And today some moderators have been appointed to decide if some tip activities should be revoked. I am a nobody and have very few followers but as a long term supporter of$DEGEN I also want to give my two cent. I remembered few days ago Jacek said the tipping mechanics are too PvP right now. I am not sure if we have different understanding to PvP, but I do believe to moderate the tipping activities will definitely make the system more PvP. I viewed the recent discussions in the TG group, and yes, there are many debates. It started from one guy criticized the other user as a farmer, and that user fought back and said that guy tipped each other with his friend in the precious seasons as well. Then the war brake out and lots of members participated.
2) I don’t remember any rules of tipping have been advised before when the lock feature was launched. And I remember Jacek once said in TG group that If you staked DEGEN, feel free to tip whoever you like.
Yes, you can still tip whoever you like. However, for the good of the community, we need basic moderation rules.
Thanks for reply. I stick to my opinion that the less limitations, the better. People shall decide how to tip by themselves. And I also worry the moderation would make the mechanism more PvP. I already noticed some people in TG group said they will keep an eye on one moderator to see if he will tip4tip with his friends.
3) While the farming activities could be discussed later, I strongly believe the moderation of tipping is wrong. People have locked their token for 3 months and were given tip allowance. They never expect in the begging that if their tips are valid should be decided by other people.
4) By the way, to prove I am true supporter, when Jacek firstly set up the poll to decide how long the $DEGEN shall be locked, I selected 12 months. And at that time, I don’t even know what benefits it would be to lock $DEGEN.
5) OK, so what is the consequence of moderation? Like Jacek said, it would make the community to be more PvP. As shown in the TG group, when moderator say an user is farming, definitely the user would try to investigate the moderator’s activities, and even try to show there are other users are farming but not have been identified. Can the system be more PvP? People will fight and whistle-blowing each other. Is this what you want to see?
6) let’s further discuss the moderation itself. As I have seen, some people said the tips should be given to valuable or interesting contents. So who decide what contents are valuable and interesting? The moderators? I have foreseen a picture. As time goes by, people will know more and more about the tastes of the moderators, and will begin to post the contents that those moderators like. Is it really what we want to see? To grant the crowns to some people and let the others to please them? Is it even the vision of DEGEN? Originally we want the community to be open and welcomed to newcomers.
7) Besides I have also noticed the list of the moderators. All are power badge holders. Let me be straightforward, farcaster has already been harsh for newcomers. I noticed no matter what shitposts the PB holders have posted, they got replies by their friends and other ordinary users who hope to interact with the holders to try to get the PB. Originally $DEGEN is a good try to tokenize the farcaster community and absorb outsiders to join this community. But now I see the $DEGEN community is also becoming more and more closed and unwelcome to the newcomers. Do you really think by this way the community could be bigger?
I will continue to post if I have other thoughts. I remember Jacek once said they will hear what the community said. @jacek @cadillion @wake
8) today I noticed some discussions about allocating the incentives of locking/staking between rewards to oneself and tip allowance. I believe it is also wrong. The reason for the change of season 6 is because $degen is now an independent token, so the allocation of tips should based on whether you are “skin in the game”, but not if you are a power user of farcaster. I believe this change is great. Now people who deposited their money have the choice to tip whoever they like. It could be interesting posts, educational posts, your friends irl, and even yourself (although I don’t like this, but freedom should be given). After all, $DEGEN is a tipping currency. It is intuitive to make the benefits of locking to be tip allowance only. It is the people’s choice to tip whoever they like. To change the benefits to be like 50% reward / 50% tips sounds like the team has never figure out the reason for the change of season 6.

Any tips for beginner squatters? Start with body weight right? My glutes suck!
Bodyweight is a good start but if you want to transition to barbell squats, I would recommend just starting with the empty bar if you've got the strength for it. That will get your body used to the position and leverages for that movement (which are going to be different from bodyweight). Figure out the stance, hand positions, and bar position that work for you. Then just lots and lots of practice, focusing on stability and bracing your core.

Farcaster hubs don’t have strong consistency. There are many reasons but one is that it makes it less practical for financial use cases because of the lack of double spend protection. The irony is that this led to “tipping seasons” which became a successful meta, despite or maybe because of the constraints
This is a good thing, because we’ve found a way for semi financial transactions and social data to coexist on the same data layer without crowding out usage due to transaction fees.

no the contract just generates 1 CRC per hour for you regardless what. but you can only start generating if someone trusts you. (with Metri wallet that can also be @gnosispay ) anyway you can convert the CRC (atm) to fiat and the value you actually have somehow find out within you own circle of trust. the system is great in theory, but in practice it's highly inflationary and all users who receive CRC have strong incentive to offboard value from the system immediately
did you have first hand experience? i know they seriously tried it in Berlin some time ago, and now it seems they’re giving it another try. but I must admit it sounds to good to be true. maybe they should require to stake a part of the CRC for a set time period before you can spend it.

Really seemed like this season worked exceptionally well. Looking at early staking leader board, this likely won't improve quality of content nor widespread tip pool/farming/bot shenanigans. All to lock up maybe 1% of supply? I like the idea of having commitment to get maybe a small allocation (in fact it already was with 10k min in wallet), but it shouldn't be the primary variable.
You know who didn’t hate “staking” ? Folks buying 30 year bonds in the 80s still redeeming massive numbers in the 2008 recession. I think the difficulty with staking is that as it’s currently utilized in the crypto space it’s with inflationary assets… I think there’s room for experimentation. Staking tied to FC FID - say up to 50K with a yield tied to term, 3-6–12-18-24 mo lock ups, an opportunity for folks to earn if they’re willing to hold. Not geared toward whales so it offers opportunity for broad distribution continued. Only open for set amount of time, so emissions dynamics are well laid out, etc etc.
Thank you. I feel like the angry old man shouting at the cloud. But that's kinda my fault for expressing it poorly. All staking does is delay the inevitable. Eventually they unlock. And several times a year you need to deal with the "big unlock coming" drama. It's a band-aid. And it'll scare new participants away, rightfully so.

You’re describing the core mechanic of this token but it’s not from staking. 70% of the supply is airdropped. That’s the sell pressure. Staking gives a reason to not sell and you can’t continue to farm without staking. Degen has meme tokenomics which need to be counteracted or it’s just going to bleed out.
Staking isn't a reason to hold imo, it's a requirement to delay your selling. People already needed to hold the token for an allowance. And this could scare new participants from joining. In 90 days we will likely be right back where we were yesterday with tokens unlocking regularly. Just kicking the can. Just an opinion. We will see with time. 🤷🏻♂️
If the net outcome of this upsets farmers and makes them leave the ecosystem then it’s a win 🥇
I can see your point but I also see this as a pivot for Jacek. When a dev does something to bring buy pressure for their coin this can also be seen as bullish and allows Jacek to continue to build in the next 3 months. With Proxy looking at liquid staking I think we could see things being a lot different in 3 months. I have a hopelessly positive mindset though. It has made me do many round trips lol.

I mean, I guess you agree that staking ETH has a usecase, right, to secure the network. Here the usecase is to make the tipping game more sustainable. It directly impacts how long it could theoretically run for by lowering supply, and basically rewarding people who “prove” they’re here for the “long run”. If the only reward is tip allocation, how does that not encourage the exact behaviors we're trying to reduce? I would need at least 10x reward to lock a large amount for more than a few months.
